Subtle, creamy lees with roasted pineapple, spice and a touch of mineral. Tactile with a medium to full body, showing some delicious citrus fruit with fresh, balanced acidity. Pretty flavorful but remains elegant. 100% chardonnay. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Serve at around 12–14 °C (54–57 °F). Not a wine to drink fridge cold. A stencil drift of smoke across the tilleul fragrance on the nose. White currant, russet apple, early autumn sweetness. There’s a subtle, crystalline purity that is somehow rounded and held in a breath-taking pause, like the trembling dewdrops on a cobweb as they catch the milky light of early autumn. Based on the several vintages of Rives-Blanques Odysée in my cellar, this is embryonic. It has the confidence and clear-cut clarity of youth, but hiding a matrix of complexity that will segue into honeyed, mineral-tense, multi-dimensional, nuances as it ages. Delicious now, but personally I’d hold this back for another year or two. VGV (TC)

Almost water-white. Delicate and slightly smoky on the nose. Really fresh and lightly floral. not at all like the early Limoux Chardonnays with their dependence on oak. Such a pretty wine. No wild extremes but nothing whatsoever to object to. Horribly low yield though. Lovely texture and clearly the potential to age. A great opening-out on the finish but overall the opposite of showy. Just delightful balance. VGV

“Op, tegen en rond de lage bergen en heuvels van Limoux exploiteren Jan en Caryl Panman (foto) een prachtig wijngoed, Château Rives-Blanques. Waarvan de wijngaard 22 hectare bestrijkt en uitsluitend beplant is met witte variëteiten. Uiteraard inclusief Chardonnay, want dat is de grote specialiteit van de herkomstbenaming Limoux. Met 9 hectare is het op Rives-Blanques zelfs de belangrijkste variëteit. De stevige, net als een blanke Bourgogne op vat vergiste en gelagerde jaargang 2020 heeft ook de allure van een Bourgogne, met in zijn sappige smaak elementen van noten, roosteraroma’s, zacht kruidig hout en naar mild neigend fruit van citrus en witte vruchten. Geen wonder dat eerder oogstjaren met goud werden bekroond, en tevens geschonken aan boord van KLM. En zijn prijs? Die is allesbehalve Bourgondisch, namelijk €14,75, bij www.colaris.nl

This wine gets better and better every year, I am sure. One of the best tests of a wine, especially a young wine, is, in my book, the ‘accidentally leave a half-finished glass out overnight’ test. Not only was this wine stupendously taut, pure, sustained and richly generous in its delivery for a full week after being opened, but one morning I came downstairs to find the glass had been overlooked while we were tidying up. I nearly threw out the 50 ml of wine left in it, and then hesitated. Later that day I tasted it. It tasted, and smelled, as if it had just been poured. It’s chiselled but not lean. It smells as it tastes, of quince and pickled lemon, cracked coriander and black pepper, distilled essence of apple dipped in a chimera of cream. The acidity races against the speed of light, refracting flavour like a chandelier in firelight, like holding crystals up to summer sunrise. It has become more and more sculpted every year, but never sacrificing structure for purity, or purity for fruit. I tasted this, the first time, in a line-up of Languedoc whites commanding double or more in price. It soared above them, effortlessly. VGV (TC)

Chardonnay-met-hout, chardonnay opgevoed op houten vaatjes, dat vind je zo ongeveer overal ter wereld. Van lukraak commercieel in elkaar geflanst, vlotte massaproductie, gelikt, patserig, opgediend met klatergoud tot bourgognes van naam en faam waar je stil van wordt.
Dit is er ook eentje, en gelukkig niet zomaar eentje. Het hout overheerst niet, de chardonnay is niet overrijp, en het geheel smaakt niet alsof het van waar dan ook ter wereld kan komen. Dit is chardonnay-met-hout met karakter. Rank en pittig, met iets licht kruidigs, een vleug appel, die zwierige zuren, alles zo apart dat je nog eens extra het achteretiket bestudeert, want je zou zweren dat hier ook wat van Limoux’s eigenste mauzacdruif inzat.
Maar nee. Die bijzondere smaak, dat karakter, dat is het terroir. Het eigene van van de herkomst. Dit is chardonnay-met-hout met het karakter van Limoux.

Ce vin séduit par la clarté de son nez sans exubérance, jolie déclinaison entre citron, pomelo, vanille et pointe de miel. Puissant, structuré, riche et bien sudiste à l’attaque, volubile dans ses arômes de fruits jaunes murs et de miel d’acacia, la bouche surprend par sa finale bien tranchante. Déjà de belles sensations et aussi de belles promesses.
The clarity of this wine’s nose seduces without any over-exuberance, ranging between lemon, pomelo, vanilla and a touch of honey. Powerful, structured, rich and very southern in its attack, the aromas of ripe yellow fruit and acacia honey are very present, while the palate surprises with its chiseled finish. This wine has much to offer already, and also promises great things for the future.

Linden blossom and spicy yuzu citrus on the nose. The fruit weight on the palate swoops into a curve, touching golden apple, vanilla pod, Comice pear, yellow guava. Then it drawstring tightens towards the finish, fine cedar spice and mineral brushed-steel-and-stone lines appearing like arrows into the finish. The cool elegance of Limoux etched into every drop. Fleur de tilleul et d’agrumes épicés du yuzu au nez. Le poids du fruit en bouche s’enfonce dans une courbe, touchant la pomme dorée, la gousse de vanille, la poire Pyrus Communis et la goyave jaune. Ensuite, le cordon se resserre pour la finition, les fines épices de cèdre et les lignes minérales en acier brossé et en pierre apparaissent comme des flèches. L’élégance de la fraîcheur de Limoux gravée dans chaque goutte.

Limoux, with its combination of Mediterranean and Atlantic climates, is the one place in the Languedoc which can produce elegant Chardonnay. There is fresh fruit on the nose, with well integrated oak – Limoux must be fermented and aged in oak – and nicely balanced acidity on the palate, with a textured youthful mouthfeel. An elegant finish, and a wine that will develop with bottle age.

Sur la réserve, le nez livre des nuances lactées et vanillées, dans un registre fin et sans outrance. Une belle acidité traverse de part en part une bouche tonique, dotée d’une matière tendre, étirée, et d’une longueur impressionnante. Finale magistrale et lumineuse sur le citron, les fruits secs (noisette, amande) et le riz au lait.
Fine nuances of restrained milky vanilla on the nose. The acidity is beautiful, tonic and tense but soft, and impressively long. A magisterial, luminous finish on notes of lemon, dried fruits (hazelnut, almond) and rice pudding. We predict a bright future for this wine.

De monocépage wijn Odyssée doet het fantastisch bij alle eetbare zaken uit het water mits klaargemaakt op een barbecue. Prettig glas met stevige body, maar ook met frisheid, iets tropisch en een behoorlijke lengte. Het betaalbare broertje van een Bourgogne op hoog niveau.
Does wonderfully well with anything edible from the water done on the barbecue. A nice, sturdy glass, with freshness, a touch of tropical fruits, and very good length. An affordable alternative to a very good Burgundy.

Lemon yellow. Oaky aromas. On the palate peach, lemon, pineapple, melon. Tight oak structure, nutty with a hint of sweet vanilla and breadiness. Love the structure, balance and restraint with long mineral acidity matched by the exotic fruit. Restraint and complexity at the same time and still very young. Really beautiful.

THE SIMPLE SOMMELIER Maxwell Allwood July 2016
This is a different beast entirely, as it is Rives-Blanques’ version of a textbook Limoux AOP. It is a Chardonnay, again from low-yielding, old vines. It is restrained and elegant, yet there is aromatic complexity with some wet-stone and struck flint minerality underscoring the fresh pear and lemon peel fruit notes. In the mouth it is creamy, and there are lovely, delicate white floral and peach flavours. The wine has wonderful freshness, and it is extremely elegant, finishing again with a sense of mineral depth. Comparisons with high-end Burgundy are inevitable, and of course this is better value than something from one of the Côte d’Or’s lauded villages, but I also think it offers unrivalled value in a global sense. In the UK market, at this sub £15 price point, I doubt you can find this quality from, say, Margaret River or Santa Barbara County.
ROSEMARY GEORGE MW Taste Languedoc August 2015 This is their biggest selling still wine, of which they produce 20,000 bottles p.a. as opposed to 8000 for the other still wines. Depending on the vintage, 15 – 20% of the grapes are fermented in new wood. There is a hint of vanilla on both nose and palate, with some rounded buttery fruit balanced by acidity on the palate. Quite youthful and firm. Nicely ripe and balanced, with good acidity and ripe fruit. The various plots are kept separate, which makes for variations at blending.

Smells quite herbal with spicy undertones. Some green-apple notes – this is certainly very refreshing. Just slightly formulaic pear-juice notes – do they use selected yeast? Lovely refreshment and I’m sure the vines are grown beautifully. I just feel it could have a little more personality – but this may be the fault of the rather strict Limoux AOC rules.

Offering more spice, orange blossom, Meyer lemon and a hint of mint, this is another exotic white from this first rate estate. When I first met Jan and Caryl Panman two years at the Languedoc Outsiders tasting, this was the wine that impressed me most. It hails from their Le Pech vineyard at 380 metres; fermented and matured in French oak, this sleek nutty minerally Chardonnay is a serious match for Burgundy.

Also outstanding and a terrific value, the 2014 Limoux Odyssée is all chardonnay from higher elevation parcels. The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented in (20% new) French oak. It has classical chardonnay apple, lemon-peel and hints of tropical fruit to go with medium bodied nicely fruited yet always fresh, lively and balanced style on the palate. It will keep 4 – 5 years.

Pale lemon. Totally closed on the nose – hiding away – youth? Green apples and vibrato and fantastic eucalypte note. The tiniest hint of gunpowder, flintiness, and lurking under all those youthful sinewy angles and geometry, a hint of the depth of the fruit that is there. So so elegant. The acidity cuts the palate with the precision of a surgeon’s knife. Drink 2016 – 2021

Ce chardonnay jaune paille a enchanté les dégustateurs, qui louent l’intensité de son nez sur le coing frais, la poire williams puis le chevrefeuille, nuancés de touches beurrées. Franc à l’attaque, le palais est encore plus expressif: l’abricot frais entre en scene, puis, e finale, la noisétte grillée et des touches minérales. Sa matiere ample et concentrée fait elle aussi l’unanimité. A boire 2017 – 2021. **

A very light touch with the oak on the nost. Lightly, smokily reductive. Absolutely masses of acidity on the palate! This is not for the Bridgit Jones brigade, and it probably needs a bit of time but should provide very rewarding drinking in the medium term. You’d quite happily pay twice as much if it said Puligny on the label. Very likely to be GV. No hurry whatsoever to drink this. Razor sharp and super sleek. 17

A ripe yet fresh nose offers up notes of floral, white peach, pear and apple that are trimmed in enough wood to notice. There is very good concentration to the round and very lush medum-bodied flavors that display a trace of citrus on the clean and dry finish. This delivers good quality in a frank style that could be enjoyed now or held for a year first. 87 pts.

A terrific chardonnay that’s fermente in 15% new French oak, with batonnage twice a week. It has smokeing notes of crushed rocks, ripe apple, buttered citrus and brioche to go with a medium-bodied, supple, textured feel on the palate. It nees more tension and focus on the palate, but the nose alone is worth the price of admission. These new releases from Chateau Rives-Blanques are some of the top whites reviewed for this Languedoc report. They also represent terrific values

This is 100% Chardonnay. A pale straw gold. Nose of sweet fruit, intense melons and peaches, a riper warm climate style. Nevertheless, given time in the glass, it shifts from being a vehicle merely for the pure, sweet fruit to a more pithy, challenging and certainly more appealing character. The palate has some fleshy fruit, with a glossy finish to the wine’s tangible, bitter, very appealing grip, There are more orchard fruits here, with a citrus freshness, and a dry pithy character to it, with texture and weight. Good bite to it in the finish. Give it time in the decanter and it works now, but there is surely potential for the cellar here, for a year or two perhaps? 16/20 (December 2012)

The palate has a confident flesh, with plenty of supple substance. There is plenty of zippy, tangy acidity to it as suggested on the nose, with some good grip as well. There is a little frame of oak here, giving some grip, but other wise it is very subtle. Lots of crunchy, sherbetty acidity on the finish. This has a much fresher character than the 2006, and one that appeals much more to me. There is richness here, a lemon-honey cake character, but it is cut through with elements of smoke, toast and importantly a vibrant freshness. Pale gold. Creamy. Bit of brulée/patisserie and lemony waxed notes that remind me a bit of an older Riesling. Honeyed lemon on the palate with piercing acidity that lasts and vibrates across the tongue like a violin string. Hint of wild herbs, honey and sage, and wild medow. Very exciting to see how these wines age, and how much complexity builds with age. Still so fresh. Mouth-filling and thrilling and so hard to spit. I had to edit a lot of exclamation marks out of my original tasting notes (Tamlyn Currin).
